"The Last Emperor" OST (Full Album Listen)
"The Last Emperor" OST (Full Album Listen)
I woke up with the notion of "OST"s, where I'd realised I had quite a few in my collection - borne of (A) wanting to recreate the joy and experience of watching the film the OST was from, and (B) admittedly purchased quite a number of albums based only on the selection of songs, of films I've not watched - as it reminded me muchly of "mixtape" - BUT not necessarily for (instrumental) MUSIC-veered OSTs
"The Last Emperor" is the soundtrack album for the movie of the same name, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. And while memories of the film borders along "vague" and vivid", the soundtrack however, continues to evoke the grandeur and wonder of what I had watched, in Lido cinema back in the day (unfortunately a more "dramatic" situation which I've since decided not worth mentioning again, as it quite literally colored my experience of the film itself lol).
Extremely notable were the inclusion of Ryuichi Sakamoto (HUGE fan, am I) and David Byrne (him of "Talking Heads" fame) in composing the score, and a prime example of the OST being a intangible "character" of the film and story-telling, IMHO. The album won the Best Original Score award at the 1987 Academy Awards, rightly so (Wiki). Here's the trackl;ist and a listen...
1. "First Coronation"- Ryuichi Sakamoto (1:46)
2. "Open the Door" - Ryuichi Sakamoto (2:54)
3. "Where Is Armo?"- Ryuichi Sakamoto (2:26)
4. "Picking Up Brides"- Ryuichi Sakamoto(2:39)
5. "The Last Emperor – Theme Variation 1" - Ryuichi Sakamoto (2:19)
6. "Rain (I Want a Divorce)" - Ryuichi Sakamoto (1:49)
