Cocteau Twins (80s-90s)

WHO-WERE: "Cocteau Twins were a Scottish band active from 1979 to 1997. They were formed in Grangemouth by Robin Guthrie (guitars, drum machine) and Will Heggie (bass), adding Elizabeth Fraser (vocals) in 1981 and replacing Heggie with multi-instrumentalist Simon Raymonde in 1983.

The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the soprano vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often abandon recognisable language. They pioneered the 1980s alternative rock subgenre of dream pop."

I am often reminded of numerous evolutary variations of "dream pop" soundscapes via indie bands here in Asia and overseas, from the early-electronic "Slow Mo Smile" of Bottlesmoker, to South Korean girl group sub-unit of LOONA's Odd Eye Circle, and this Thursday evening, I had a yearning for dream pop, actually ... so why not go to the "source"?

Beyond the "dream pop" moniker, I had initially called this "British jingle-jangle", I still call it now (in my mind and this blog) ... a post/alternative-"British New Romantics/New Wave" attitude and indie sound associated with The Smiths, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, and even The Jesus And Mary Chain, and the focus for this blogpost; "Cocteau Twins".

Featured above is a docu/featurette by Trash Theory (Titled "The Dreampop Enigma of Cocteau Twins & LORELEI"), while below is a few of their MVs (Somer legit, some fanmade) and live performances to enjoy - ranging from the 80s to the 90s. I have never been wholly familiar with their songs as much as others I had mentioned above, so this blog-post has been my most "extensive" introduction to the group.
