SILENCE (Album) by FAITH YANG 楊乃文
There was a period in the mid-late 90s where I (somewhat) reconnected to Chinese music - due to a short relationship, actually - which (re)opened up my preference for Mando(Rock)Pop. A few notable names linger in my memories; F.I.R., Power Station, Chang Chen-yue, and Faith Yang etc.
Today I'd like to share a specific album from FAITH YANG 楊乃文 (pinyin: Yáng Nǎiwén): her 1999 album "Silence" - the only CD I own of her songs.
The 90s' indie grunge soundscape and aesthetic is strong in this release, and suited the period to a T, even as it fade into the 2000s. "In 2000, Faith won the Taiwan Golden Music awards for Best Female Performer got nominated for Best Album (Silence)" (Source). "Silence" was recorded under the "Magicstone" label (like her first 1997 album, "One"), apparently she left the label as she disagreed with the commercial direction they were heading for.
Through the years, I have not kept track of her sounds, but for a sprinkling here and there ... but the music memories of "Silence" lingers still ... featured below is the actual track listing, and an impressive line-up of MVs to go with it too! In actuality, a whole lot of 90s chinese pop would have such, as they were included in karaoke videos, with singalong lyrics too!

The 11th and final track cemented my love for her album and songs: Her cover of Depeche Mode's "Somebody" (4:17)! Credited to Martin Gore, no less.
