Strawberry Switchblade (1985)
"Strawberry Switchblade" was one of the few bands whose melodies typify the "innocence" of the 80's for me, with their pop-breezy tunes, especially with "Who Knows What Love Is" (to which I am constantly reminded of LOONA's earlier dreamscape sounds); the first song I've heard from them - which still puts a smile on my aged face as well as tender goosepimples :p - one of the funny things which still lingers on until this day, is whenever I refer to "Strawberry Shortcake" (toys from my sister's youth) I'd still say strawberry switchblade ...
Besides their sound, I'd always remember them for their "gothic lolita" fashion-stylings - which I used to call "candypop-goth", anyways. On hindsight, as somewhat glaring their fashion sense was, back in the mid-1980s - it did leave behind a visual legacy alongside their sounds, at least to me and my faded memories...
WHO-IS: "Strawberry Switchblade was a Scottish indie pop-rock female quartet sporting gothic sensibilities. Formed in Glasgow in 1981, the band became the duo of Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall in 1982, and had a minor hit in the mid-1980s with their song "Since Yesterday". They were signed to WEA Records by Bill Drummond." (Wiki)
And it breaks the silence
Of my waking hours
And my heartbeat's licence
For I hate the trees
And I hate the flowers
And I hate the buildings
And the way they tower over me
Can't you see
I get so frightened
No-one else seems frightened
Only me, only me
I can't but see
That the sun has risen
To my window, my world
Of my home sweet prison
For I hate the trees
And I hate the flowers
And I hate the buildings
And the way they tower over me
Can't you see
I get so frightened
No-one else seems frightened
Only me, only me
You know why I don't want see you
Remember when we went to the bay
You had your car so we thought we'd go
Since it was such a nice day
I remember walking with you to the rocks
Not knowing what you had in mind
I closed my eyes to make a wish
But opened them up to find
You'd slipped away and I wondered where
Thinking you'd return, I thought I would stay
But after a while you hadn't returned
Then it didn't seem such a nice day
[Pre-Chorus]
I remember sitting there on the rocks
Not knowing you had gone away
I was sitting there on my own
Wiping the tears away
[Chorus] Go away
I wish you would go away
I want you to go away
I wish you would go
[Verse 2]
You've come to ask me how I am
But I don't want to see you today
You said it was fun but I cannot smile
I just wish that you would go away
[Pre-Chorus]
I still remember sitting there on the rocks
Not knowing you had gone away
I was sitting there on my own
Wiping the tears away
[Chorus]
Go away
I wish you would go away
I want you to go away
I wish you would go away
I want you to go away
I wish you would go away
I want you to go away
I wish you would go
